Winnipeg Councillor Admits On
Radio That Safety Of
Photo Radar Is Hard To Measure

February 18,2009

Gord Steeves Chairman of the City's Protection and Community Services Committee appeared on CBC's Information Radio this morning with Larry Stefanuik from trafficticketguru.com to discuss the launch of the Winnipeg Police Services new traffic safety program 'Just Slow Down'.

This was in response to our article on how the City is using the Safety program and the stories of those who have lost loved ones to severe collisions as a means to promote Photo Enforcement as a safety tool which according to the City's own Statistics shows that it is not improving safety at all.

Councillor Steeves was presented with an example from the Just Slow Down web site showing the intersection of Grant and Route 90 as being the worst intersection in the City for collisions. Even though there are Three Red Light Cameras nearby that are monitoring traffic heading towards the intersection and over the course of the photo enforcement program these cameras have issued over 85,000 tickets total.

Two of these Cameras are the City's most productive. With all the tickets issued and if the cameras are changing driver behavior, then Grant and Route 90 should actually have much fewer collisions.

Steeves' response to the example was that he agreed the City and The Police were having difficulties showing the safety improvements to roadways.

When asked by announcer Marcy Markusa if the City could get out of the contract with ACS, Steeves remarked that it was likely possible but did not elaborate.

Finally the discussion led to longer Amber times and Why the City has not experimented with them even though studies are showing that they can greatly reduce if not virtually eliminate red light running, speeding and all types of Collision. Steeves had little to say on the subject and was saved by the Bell when time ran out to discuss the matter further.

The facts are blatant that photo enforcement is indeed a cash grab. We have presented more then enough evidence at this site to prove this, however the City of Winnipeg along with other Jurisdictions continue to count on the complacency of the average motorist to just remain quiet and pay their tickets.

Trafficticketguru.com remains committed to being the voice of those who wish to stand up and be counted and force their City to explore ways that actually do make roads safer and not just revenue generating cash grabs.
