As a finishing carpenter with jobs across the GTA, Gabor Sarvary uses a GPS system to help him navigate from his west-end home to work sites in Brampton, Markham and Hamilton.
Now, he's also using the device to avoid getting tickets for speeding or running a red light.
It's all thanks to a program called PhantomAlert. The system contains a database of speed traps, red-light cameras and alcohol check stops, information that is then fed into its subscribers' GPS systems. When Sarvary is within 250 metres of a speed trap, the system beeps at him, telling him to slow down.
And unlike photo radar detectors, the software is legal in the province.
"It's really helpful to drive more safely, it helps me keep to the speed limit," said Sarvary, 36.
For Sarvary, the system is invaluable. In the four months he's had the system, he hasn't had a ticket.
"It's just helping you not to break the law," he said. "It's tapping your shoulder."
Randolph Pribgen purchased the PhantomAlert program for his GPS navigator a year ago. It was mostly for safety, he said, but it does help escape the long arm of the law given the growing numbers of speed cameras in Maryland.
"I love kids, so it's good for school zones," said Mr. Pribgen, 43, of Newmarket, Md. "Sometimes I'm driving, in outer space somewhere, and that alert just brings me back to Earth."
The technology alerts Mr. Pribgen a few hundred yards before his car reaches a school, speed camera or known enforcement zone, flashing a red light on his GPS unit and sounding a voice warning.
